FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT ARE DETECTIONGLOVES.COM CHEMICAL DETECTION GLOVES?
DetectionGloves.com Chemical Detection Gloves combine a protective nitrile glove with integrated fingertip chemical-detection zones designed to provide a visible, presumptive indication when a designated target substance is encountered.
HOW THICK ARE THE GLOVES?
The gloves are designed with a 5-mil nitrile construction to provide a practical balance of dexterity, tactile sensitivity, durability, and protective performance.
WHAT STANDARD WILL THE NITRILE GLOVES MEET?
Production gloves are intended to utilize nitrile gloves meeting applicable ASTM D6978 performance requirements.
ASTM D6978 establishes a standardized method for evaluating resistance of medical gloves to permeation by chemotherapy drugs.
Final commercial production specifications and supporting testing documentation will apply to the finished production glove.
HOW LONG SHOULD A PAIR OF DETECTION GLOVES BE WORN?
Detection gloves should not be continuously worn for more than four (4) hours.
They should be replaced sooner if they become contaminated, torn, punctured, excessively stretched, significantly worn, or otherwise damaged or compromised.
CAN DETECTION GLOVES BE REUSED?
A glove may be re-worn only if it has NOT:
• Produced a detection response
• Contacted a known or suspected hazardous substance
• Become contaminated or significantly soiled
• Been punctured, torn, stretched, or otherwise damaged
• Experienced significant wear to a detection zone or glove surface
The glove and all detection zones must remain visibly clean, intact, and serviceable.
Detection gloves are not intended to be washed, chemically disinfected, decontaminated, or reprocessed for reuse. Once removed after a potentially hazardous exposure, the glove should be discarded in accordance with applicable procedures.
Agency policy and final product labeling should always control.
WHAT HAPPENS IF A DETECTION PANEL CHANGES COLOR?
A color response should be treated as a PRESUMPTIVE POSITIVE indication for the substance assigned to that detection zone.
The wearer should follow all applicable agency procedures for:
• Hazardous-material handling
• Evidence handling
• Personal protective equipment
• Decontamination
• Confirmatory testing
• Disposal
A glove that has produced a detection response should not be returned to routine service.
DOES A COLOR CHANGE DEFINITIVELY IDENTIFY A SUBSTANCE?
No.
DetectionGloves.com products are intended for PRESUMPTIVE FIELD SCREENING.
A positive indication is not a substitute for laboratory analysis or another appropriate confirmatory method when definitive identification is required.
DOES NO COLOR CHANGE MEAN THE MATERIAL OR SURFACE IS SAFE?
No.
A negative indication does not establish that a substance, residue, liquid, object, or surface is free from the target analyte or otherwise safe.
Detection performance may be affected by factors including:
• Concentration
• Amount of material contacted
• Sample or surface characteristics
• Interfering substances
• Environmental conditions
• Storage conditions
• Product age
• Contamination
• Physical wear
• Proper use
DO DETECTION GLOVES REPLACE NORMAL PPE OR SAFETY PROCEDURES?
No.
Chemical-detection capability is an additional screening function and does not replace established PPE, hazardous-material, occupational-safety, evidence-handling, or agency protocols.
Users should never intentionally contact an unknown or potentially hazardous substance merely because they are wearing a DetectionGloves.com glove.
DO THE GLOVES REQUIRE A READER OR ELECTRONIC DEVICE?
No.
The detection system is designed to produce a visible colorimetric indication directly on the glove without requiring a powered reader, electronic instrument, or separate test strip.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SINGLE-PANEL AND 4-PANEL GLOVES?
SINGLE-PANEL DETECTION GLOVE
One dedicated detection zone is located on the index fingertip. The customer selects the target substance for that glove.
Available target configurations include:
• Fentanyl — Target Cutoff: 10 ng/mL — Purple Indicator
• Carfentanil — Target Cutoff: 50 ng/mL — Orange Indicator
• Xylazine — Target Cutoff: 25 ng/mL — Yellow Indicator
• Medetomidine — Target Cutoff: 100 ng/mL — Red Indicator
4-PANEL DETECTION GLOVE
Four independent fingertip detection zones are incorporated into the glove:
• INDEX — Fentanyl — Purple — Target Cutoff: 10 ng/mL
• MIDDLE — Carfentanil — Orange — Target Cutoff: 50 ng/mL
• RING — Xylazine — Yellow — Target Cutoff: 25 ng/mL
• PINKY — Medetomidine — Red — Target Cutoff: 100 ng/mL
• THUMB — Standard nitrile surface; no detection panel
Target detection cutoffs are intended commercial specifications and remain subject to final validation of the production glove.
DO ALL FOUR PANELS ACTIVATE AT THE SAME TIME?
No.
Each detection zone is designed to operate independently.
A response on one fingertip does not require or cause activation of the other detection zones.
WHAT TYPES OF MATERIALS CAN BE SCREENED?
DetectionGloves.com gloves are being developed for presumptive screening involving suspected:
• Powders
• Residues
• Liquids
• Contaminated objects
• Contaminated surfaces
Use should remain within the validated operating conditions and final instructions supplied with the commercial product.
CAN THE DETECTION PANELS WEAR OUT?
Yes.
The sensing zones, like the glove itself, can be affected by physical wear, contamination, abrasion, environmental exposure, storage conditions, and normal material degradation.
A glove should be removed from service if a detection zone shows visible damage, excessive abrasion, deterioration, separation, discoloration unrelated to a detection event, or other evidence that its integrity may have been compromised.
CAN THE GLOVES BE WASHED OR DISINFECTED?
No cleaning, washing, chemical disinfection, solvent treatment, or decontamination method should be used unless that specific procedure has been expressly validated and approved for the finished DetectionGloves.com product.
Cleaning agents and solvents could interfere with the detection chemistry, sensing zones, or nitrile glove material.
HOW SHOULD UNUSED GLOVES BE STORED?
Unused gloves should remain in their original packaging and be stored in a clean, dry environment away from:
• Excessive heat
• Excessive moisture
• Direct sunlight
• Strong chemicals
• Solvents
• Contaminants
• Conditions that could degrade the nitrile material or detection zones
Always follow the storage conditions appearing on final product labeling.
HOW SHOULD USED GLOVES BE DISPOSED OF?
Disposal should follow the user's applicable agency, facility, hazardous-material, evidence, biomedical, and local waste-handling requirements.
A glove that has contacted a suspected hazardous substance should be handled and disposed of according to the nature of that exposure and should not automatically be treated as ordinary uncontaminated waste.
